LAYING-UP DINNER 2011

Members and guests during the reception before the Laying Up Dinner at the Royal Automobile Club on 7 November

More than 100 CLYC members and guests enjoyed a delicious meal in elegant surroundings at the Royal Automobile Club on Monday 7 November.
The Commodore, in welcoming the diners, congratulated Lucy MacGregor and her team for being selected as the British challengers in the Ladies Match Racing at the Olympics next year. The focus of the Club’s fund-raising has been Lucy, Annie and Kate, and it is even more important that we

continue to contribute to ensure they can have the best coaching possible for the contest. They have recently beaten the French team (at which there were great cheers!) and we have contributed £15,000 so far, thanks to the generosity of the members. During dinner envelopes were sold for prizes donated by members to raise further funds .
In proposing the toast to the guests, Committee Member Dr Derek Ross, mentioned, beside the speaker, Chris

Alderman John White (City of London Solicitors’ Company), Joseph King FCSI (International Bankers), Ray Woodhouse (Butchers), Immediate Past Commodore Michael Wilkey (Chartered Architects), Don Barker (Prime Warden, Blacksmiths’ Company).
Mike Emmett, skipper, builder and owner of Black Rose, a 40 foot replica Oyster Smack, which has competed at Burnham for the past few years, was the guest speaker; he spoke movingly about his experiences on the Blackwater River, as a Lighterman, sailor and fisherman, as well as author of three books, and proposed the toast

to the Club.
In concluding the evening, the Commodore presented the Commodore’s Trophy, donated by Past Commodore David Cooper, to Nick Havell for his contribution to the Club over the past year, and Mari McMorrough Kavanagh presented the MacLennan Cup for sailing achievements to Derek Ross for his prowess in a Lymington Scow in September.
The draw plus donations raised a further £2000 for Lucy and her team.
At a meeting before dinner, the Rules of the Club were approved by the requisite 20 members, with the addendum that in future the quorum will be 12.
