THE COMMODORE'S MESSAGE

Peter Jeary, Commodore 2011-12, with his lady, Judith Dufau When we sail we push out the boundaries: whether it be racing, where the RORC is the ultimate; whether it be cruising, where Greece, Turkley, Spain, France, the Balearics are some of the best; or even danger - like a force 9 on the nose in the English Channel, skirting Les Minquiers in thick fog at the dead of night, surfing down the Alderney race or crossing Biscay; but for me, none of these adventures comes close to the absolute pride and joy of being elected Commodore of the CLYC.

Our small City Yacht Club is unique and punches well above its weight. It is therefore a most humbling experience to have the support and confidence of our illustrious membership and I thank you most sincerely. It will, however, be almost impossible to emulate those Commodores who have gone before but I can assure you it will not be for the want of trying.

Not only has Roger Burroughs, our Immediate Past Commodore, delivered one of the best attended and most enjoyable events programmes over the last year but he has laboured long and hard to have the new Rules finalised and approved. The Club could not function without this matter being put to rest and it is a great relief to know that this is not now on my 'to do' list! It is also only fitting to mention Susan Burroughs, who has organised fund raising visits to the Royal Opera House, The Wallace Collection and the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel for the benefit of Lucy Macgregor and her crew.

It will be my endeavour to continue this action packed programme of events with full vigour. The final programme for 2012 has been updated on the website so you can reserve the dates in your calendars. Needless to say, we have the Olympic Games and the Queen's Jubilee Pageant on the Thames to thank for some slight adjustments to traditional timings (see the Events page for full details and note that there is an additional event to raise funds for the City branch of the RNLI. You can download the booking form here)

I ask you to continue to help our support for Lucy Macgregor and her crew, who have now been officially selected for the Olympic match racing team. With Silver in Perth, Australia, recently, Lucy is still very much in the running for a medal in 2012. We will also continue our link with the Bexley and Lewisham Sea Cadets (more of that by clicking here for page 1 and here for page 2.)

Any Club is only as good as its members are willing to make it. Can I therefore finally thank all those members of the Committee who have volunteered their valuable time to support and counsel for the ensuing year. Not to forget our hard working and dedicated Secretary, Margaret, without whom we could not function. Finally my congratulations to our new Flag Officer, John Absalom, and new committee members Margaret Plumley and Cynthia Robinson.

I look foward to sharing our fellowship of the sea in 2012.

PETER JEARY
Commodore
